Stromboli -

Visits to one of Italy's most active volcanoes was stopped recently, after a string of eruptions was recorded.  The island is inhabited by several hundred people.

The volcano is located on the island of the same name, in the Aeolian archipelago off the northern coast of Sicily. Explosions and smoke were seen billowing from the mouth of the volcano.  Excursions to the top of the volcano are popular with Italian and foreign tourists, especially during the summer season.

Stromboli has been popularized as the place actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rosellini had their illicit romance during the filming of the movie "Stromboli."
